It is a mountainous district, 75km from the center of Lang Son city to the northwest. Road 1B, which runs from Lang Son city to Thai Nguyen city, goes through the district, routes 226, 279 connecting the district with Bac Son, Trang Dinh, Van Quan, Van Lang districts (Lang Son province) and Na Ri district (Bac Kan province).

Binh Gia has five main ethnic groups: Nung, Tay, Kinh, Dao, Hoa living together, with the total population of 52,689 people in 2019. The fundamental culture of Binh Gia is the Nung - Tay culture. The whole district currently has three national-level archaeological relics (Tham Khuyen, Tham Hai and Keo Leng Caves).
