It is a highland and border district, bordering Van Quan, Cao Loc, Trang Dinh, Binh Gia districts (Vietnam) and Pingxiang (China). It is the hometown of a Vietnamese revolutionist Hoang Van Thu.

 

Van Lang has four main ethnic groups, namely Kinh, Tay, Nung, Hoa with the total population of 49,696 people (in 2019). The natural area is 56,330.46 ha. The district has 19 communes and one township named Na Sam. The district has border markets with China, the most famous one is Tan Thanh Border Gate Market.
